Our visit to Round1 Arcade at the Maine Mall in South Portland took place on a Friday morning. The outside entrance had a huge bowling pin statue above the door and when we walked in we were presented with a giant, ominous set of stairs. Going to the left you would find an elevator to take you up, as the arcade is on the 2nd level of the mall.
There were a lot of staff around and at the front desk when we came in. We stopped there to get a reloadable game card and then wander around the arcade.

Pricing
Overall, the game prices at Round1 in South Portland are some of the highest we have seen in Maine. One play at a claw machine game (about $3 on average) can be as much as double what we have seen at some other arcades around the state.
Round1 arcade uses the reloadable game card system, and you pay $2 to get a new card (they also have a $5 “Club Card” which gives special discounts for buying other products/services at Round1, but I would probably only recommend this for someone who goes multiple times per year).
The card can be loaded with credits starting at 4 credits for $1 (25 cents per credit). This is a similar figure to other arcades in Maine, except at Round1 the amount of credits you need to use per game is set at a higher rate than other businesses we visited. Like other arcades, you can receive bonus credits for putting more money down upfront.
Round1 Price Breakdown
Based upon the way the bonus credits scale, the $55 package would be my recommendation for most groups who will be spending a few hours here. The $80 package only nets you an extra 1 cent off per credit. The $120 package is a good option if you will be spending quite a lot of time, be sharing between a larger group, or will be coming back for multiple trips.
| Price | Credits | Price per credit |
|---|---|---|
| $20 | 82 | $0.24 |
| $30 | 133 | $0.23 |
| $40 | 188 | $0.21 |
| $55 | 300 | $0.18 |
| $80 | 460 | $0.17 |
| $120 | 777 | $0.15 |
We purchased the $20 game card for our family and got to play:
- 3 attempts at a claw game
- 3 quick ticket-winning skill games
- 1 sports game
- 1 Dance Dance Revolution round
For the claw games, you get 30 seconds, and the skill games we played gave about 15 seconds – so $20 would not last long depending on the games you play.

Games and Prizes
If you like claw machines, wow, are you in luck. Round1 arcade in Maine has dozens, no, probably hundreds of claw machines of all different sizes – big, regular, and the cutest tiny boxes with a little claw inside. So of course we had to try a few – the claws were fair and did grasp around the prize in the first few attempts we made – but the prize did ultimately slip out.
I try to be pretty intentional when choosing which prize to go for in a claw machine. If there is not a prize in a winnable position, then I will typically not attempt the machine. I look for a prize that is laying down flat and that has at least some air around it so the claw can surround it and get a grip.
On the 3rd (and final) claw machine we tried at Round1 in the Maine Mall, we got a good grab and watched suspensefully as the claw slowly transported the tiny pink dinosaur through to the prize shoot.
Most of the games at the arcade were modern style, with a lot of focus on extra peripherals and big eye-catching displays. There were ropes and signage to denote where you might need to stand for a certain game (or if you are just watching it).

The Prize Room
We found a large prize room in the corner of the arcade filled with many different types of toys, stuffed animals, and knick-knacks. Since we spent most of our credits on the massive selection of crane games in Round1 Arcade, we did not have a whole lot of tickets to redeem in the prize room.
We earned a little over 100 tickets during our stay, which netted us a couple small plastic toys from the assorted baskets in the prize room. To get some of the bigger or more substantial prizes, you will need about 2,000 tickets to spend. If you hit a jackpot, you could be looking at 500 – 750 tickets for 1 game play (with an average price of about $2.50), but more likely you will be earning about 40 – 50 tickets for a typical round at a ticket-winning arcade game at Round1.

Food
There is a grill and bar area with a good selection of food options. The prices were reasonable for all the options – not cheap, but not really overpriced either.
They have the usual fried food menu of burgers, chicken, and fries, and also some more Asian-inspired items like bao buns and ramen.
For the hour or so we were over at this food area, there were between 0 – 2 staff members there. There were no other customers really eating at the time we were, but there were plenty of booths and seating for many to eat.
There were also 2 party rooms close to the snack area. They were semi-private rooms with their own tables and karaoke inside. Honestly, these were some pretty nice looking party rooms that would be great for a group gathering.

Best Deals
The best deal that Round1 in South Portland has is the 99 cents ice cream. Yes, multiple flavor options and comes with a cone for just 99 cents! You get a decently big scoop of ice cream and the quality seemed fine for us. We got 2 scoops after our lunch and that was a great decision.
As far as game cards – if you are going with a family or group that can share a card, this is typically the most budget-friendly option. You can swipe the card, everyone watches that game being played, and then you move on to the next game.

Final Thoughts About Round1 Arcade
This Round1 arcade is huge and has a nice proximity to other stores and amenities at the Maine Mall. You could definitely spend all day here (if you had the budget for it), but if you needed other things, the mall has plenty of other good dining and shopping options.
There are ways you can extend your budget here, such as planning around the bonus credits you receive upfront or intentionally playing games that last longer than 30 seconds. But if you don’t go into the Round1 arcade with a financial plan in mind, then it would be easy to spend a lot of money very quickly.
Overall, the games were fun and varied, so anyone could find something they liked to play here. The food was decent with enough spaces to sit and eat, and the ice cream deal is a no-brainer to take advantage of.
