What to Expect on the Trail

This is a healthy mix of lightly ambiguous, challenging, and straightforward tasks. We partner directly with local shops and utilize public spaces/historic sites to keep you moving and thinking.

When the clock starts, your team will get a map and your first clue. From there, you might find yourself:

  • Solving Historic Riddles: Hunting for specific names on historic headstones at the local cemetery or doing some quick math at the Titcomb House.
  • Exploring Local Shops: Searching for specific items across the floors of Reny’s or navigating the book maze at Twice Sold Tales.
  • Completing Fun Challenges: Guessing mystery flavors during a taste test or figuring out a video game riddle at 3D Games.

Whether you are highly competitive or just want a fun, holistic tour of the downtown area, the race is designed to be equally challenging and entertaining for kids and adults alike.

What You Can Win

We love rewarding people for showing up, working together, and having fun. For our 2026 event, we have a few ways you can walk away a winner:

  • The Finisher Drawing: You do not have to be the fastest team to win big. Anyone who completes the full race will be entered into a drawing for a prize.
  • Best Costume: We highly encourage teams to dress up. Show up in your most creative gear to take home this prize.
  • Team Spirit: Bring the energy, encourage other racers, and show love to our local business stops to win the team spirit award.

Bring This Concept to Your Town: The Benefits

It’s great to get the businesses involved and get people in their store that maybe never would have gotten there before. They have a few minutes to create a brief relationship. — Joe, Story Trails of Maine

We built this event with the local business community in mind, and it has proven to be a massive win for town engagement. If you are a chamber of commerce, town committee, or business owner in another part of Maine, here is why this event model works so well:

  • Drives Foot Traffic: Racers are sent directly into local stores to complete tasks. It gets people through the door who might normally walk right past, giving business owners a perfect opportunity to introduce themselves to new customers.
  • Boosts Community Engagement: Local employees and business owners get to actively oversee their part of the hunt. Our past events have shown that businesses participate with incredible enthusiasm, cheering on players and building strong community roots.
  • Highlights Local History: By weaving landmarks, the local library, and historic homes into the route, the event serves as an engaging reminder of a town’s rich background.

Whether you want to sign up for our next Farmington race or you are interested in bringing a custom story trail or race to your own corner of Maine, we are here to help make it happen.
